Welcome to our farm. We're so glad you stopped by for a visit! At Desert Weyr we develop and implement sustainable systems to conserve the rare and endangered animals that provide so much for us. Our primary goals are the conservation of genetic resources and promotion of sustainable agriculture systems. We currently work primarily with sheep, geese and horses. We also work to conserve the old apple trees and are looking at new agricultural products including hops. In The News Desert Weyr recently completed the export of 11 purebred Black Welsh Mountain rams directly to Canada. We also shipped 8 purebred Black Welsh Mountain ewes who were part of an exportation of 30 sheep that arrived in Canada this summer. Of the 30 sheep that went the majority were either from our flock or of our breeding via the Fire Ant Ranch flock that was sold in its entirety to Canada. We will have a further 2 rams going in the fall. These historic exportations provide the much smaller Canadian population with new bloodlines from every existing line including the UK imported semen. We were thrilled to be able to help the conservation of the breed in Canada.
We are also the featured farm in the latest Spring issue of Edible Aspen Magazine. Check them out for a great discussion of the role rare breeds have in providing good quality local food.
Our Philosophy Our small family farm produces animal products in a humane and environmentally friendly way. We provide our food and fiber animals with a healthy life and a quick humane death. We provide our horses with the training and care they need to develop into wonderful sweet tempered friends. Our hops and apples are grown in a sustainable fashion designed to improve soil fertility and the farm environment.
We do not feed added antibiotics or growth hormones to any of our animals. Our goal is to take advantage of our animal's ability to transform inedible plants into healthy meat and wool without destroying the environment. Ruminants are ideally suited to forage based agriculture and we have selected our sheep from those breeds which are good foragers. As a benefit we can produce high quality meat without the use of grain feeds. Our lamb and mutton carcasses are very lean and yet remain tender and tasty. Please consider our mutton and lamb when you are ready to fill your freezer. Whole animals available as custom cuts.
Pilgrim Geese Sadly we lost all of our breeding geese this summer. At this time with no way to process geese for meat it is unclear whether we will continue to breed geese.
Lamb and Mutton
We have packages of mutton chops, steaks, roasts, shanks, ground meat and stew available for pickup at the farm or delivery in Paonia. Whole sheep and all lamb cuts must be special ordered. Sorry, we do not ship meat.
Arabian Horses and Spotted Mules We produce a small number of CMK Arabian horses based on the Hearst and Maynesboro lines. We also have a spotted large standard donkey jack. We are offering all of our horses and our jack for sale at this time. We no longer stand our stallions or the jack at stud.
Heritage Apples Our apple orchard was originally planted in the spring of 1905 and came from original Stark Brothers plants. We have old style Jonathan and Red Delicious apples. All our scion wood for 2008 is gone but we will again offer wood for grafting next winter.
If you are in the Western Colorado area we'd love to meet you in person. Call or write us to schedule an appointment.
